I Have Mentorship
By Emmanuel Oduntan
Growing up I often found that there were many things I wanted to do but couldn’t quite figure out how to do it. For example, I would often struggle to finish tasks in band, school and anything that wasn’t movies or video games at home.
What’s worse was that I really didn’t like asking for help. (I still don’t) Until one day a teacher in high school spoke into my life. He said “You’ve got what it takes to be the best in this class”.
At that time, I hated school. I thought it was for those kids who didn’t have what it takes to succeed in real life. But those precious words spoke life into me. They helped me understand my potential and I began to try. This was the first time I saw the value in listening to someone other than myself. It was here I learned the value of mentorship.
You see it’s not that I didn’t want to listen to people older than me, it’s that I didn’t think they understood or knew better. Ever since I’ve listened to the voice of guidance from mentors I’ve seen myself go places I could have never gone on my own, know things I could have never known on my own and grow in ways I didn’t think I was capable of.
Mentorship is invaluable, it saves so much time and pain in this journey. It helps idealists like myself get a clearer picture of reality while avoiding the destructive pitfalls.
There have been so many people that have acted as a mentor in different times and seasons of my life. But the most constant/longstanding would have to be my Uncle, Dr.Oyedokun. Everything about his life is an example to me and many others. I’m blessed to be able to hear from the incredible depth of wisdom he has on just about any topic.
Get a mentor it put’s things into perspective.
