I Have Goals
By Arianne Ens
I create goals by dividing up what I want to accomplish into bite-size pieces.
For example, I’m currently a university student, and I have to write a lot of papers. If I have the goal of writing out an entire essay in one sitting, what I produce probably won’t be great and I’ll be discouraged when I work for a long time and end up still not finished.
So, I make smaller goals to accomplish the larger goal of getting the essay done: research, write an outline, write about my first point, my second, my third… that way, even if I do something as simple as figure out what I want my points to be, I can cross it off the list and feel like I’ve accomplished something, which makes me want to do it again.
Sometimes I put very simple and quick tasks on my to-do list just so I can cross things off sooner rather than later—it genuinely helps me get motivated!
Involving Jesus in my goal making process usually just consists of asking Him what my goals should be. If we’re keeping the same example (because Jesus does care about essay writing), maybe I want to get a lot done one day, but when I check in, He’s highlighting the need to get the thesis down, and that’s it.
The thing about Jesus is that He knows more about me than I do, and He knows exactly what I can and should do at any given moment. I’m not even joking when I say He helped me write a paper by telling me to stop telling myself that my work was garbage. The moment I decided to listen to Him and make declarations like, “it’s not quite finished, but I’m getting there,” or “I’m doing my best” I was able to gain inspiration and write something I ended up being proud of.
My Jesus-directed goal that day was to change my mind about my work, and when I did it, I was able to make serious headway on reaching that goal of finishing the essay.
